Baby’s First Tastes – Weaning Your Baby

Claire
Every parent will have their own way of tackling weaning. There are so many weaning books on the market, not to mention weaning articles floating around the internet.

Personally, I found this method works best for my own children as well as numerous babies in my care throughout the years.

And if you know my children, they have always had a good relationship with food from day one!
🥣 Very First Taste – Keep It Simple.
By introducing a baby cereal with their own milk, it is just getting baby used to the spoon, the new texture and the new environment (highchair) that they are in. It tastes so similar to what they are used to, that it won’t be a huge leap and put them off.

Don’t be worrying about the amounts they take. You just want to make sure their thrusting reflex is more controlled and baby is getting used to swallowing the food- not spitting it back out.

Veg Out
🥕 When baby begins to actually take in small amounts of cereal without an issue, and you see them becoming more interested, then you can begin to introduce your second meal..

Vegetable purées. 🥕🥦🍏🥑

Babies tend to like the sweeter fruit purées, so more often than not, if they are introduced to fruit first, they may reject or dislike the taste of vegetables. Also, root vegetables are rare to give reactions.

Take 2 days between each new taste, writing down in a notepad how each taste has gone.

Go Slow At First
🍏 Two meals can be a lot for babies at first, especially with bottles on top of it! So don’t force a third meal until you think baby can handle it.

This normally happens between month 5-6. I begin to introduce sweet tastes.

It is common for babies to begin to show less interest in one particular bottle, or reduce their overall intake of milk, as they will be a lot fuller from all the food!

Keep Consistent – But Mix It Up!
🥕🍏 Remember to use combinations of food already tasted to expand baby’s palette!
